3 Comments Harlem World “I Really Like It” (produced by Just Blaze)

Posted by The Elitaste on 02 Aug 2008

Saw this post over at Nah Right where Just Blaze talks about his first placement which was this. I totally forgot about this record but looking back, this beat is fire! And yo, Ma$e dancing? Was that acceptable back then? Why don’t we see more dancing rappers now? Discuss.

Edit: Wil May is quick to point out this album included some of The Neptunes earlier placements. Thanks Wil, we knew that.

Is that you, Betha?! I haven’t seen this in the longest but Mase was the man back in ‘98, ‘99. Who is that chick singing the hook? I remember Jay dissed Meeno off of this video too.

Oh S**t, I completely forgot about this song. I used to jam to this joint all the time…I especially like how he dressed up like the security guard from Martin…

In terms of whether or not it was acceptable, I think so, but I do believe it was sort of a revival… Back in the day MC’s used to dance in their videos all the time (Kid N Play, Biz Markie, Big Daddy Kane, etc), but then there was a shift when artists like Nas,Black Moon, Wu-Tang, and other 90’s East Coast legends came into the picture because for many the subject matter changed in accordance with the new social climate.
I think when bad boy(Along with artists like Missy Elliot) started dropping those lavish videos filled with long choreographed dance segments (e.g. Feels So Good, Harlem shake), they really pushed it to the limit and brought that feel back. So wait Dan, you mean to tell me that your not feeling all this minstrel show dancing and flying squirrel cranking??? HAHAHA!!!

This album also featured some of the first NEPTUNES album cuts…

LOOKING AT ME was the first single as the NEPTUNES as we know them and that sound.

So MA$E (and Diddy) shadily started the NEPTUNES’ career.
