DURHAM, NORTH CAROLINA — J Records recording artist MIKE POSNER, whose single “Cooler Than Me” was 2nd most added at radio this week, has announced he will return to his alma mater Duke University in the fall to pursue an MBA. Slated for a summer 2010 release date, Posner’s debut album is nearly complete and he will be performing at The Bamboozle Festival, Bonnaroo Festival and all 42-dates on this summer’s Warped Tour. However, Mike will be hitting the books not the road in the fall
Posner, 22, gained notoriety for his self-released mixtapes which led to a recording contract with J Records in July 2009 and Mike returned to finish his senior year at Duke shortly thereafter, graduating early with a 3.6.
Since moving to Los Angeles in February, Posner has recently been swept up in the Blue Devil frenzy surrounding Duke’s appearance in the Final Four which he says inspired him to make the return to Durham in the fall and put his music career on hold indefinitely.
“I love Duke and all the school has done for me,” said Posner via phone from his Los Angeles home. “I accomplished so much with my undergraduate degree in sociology, I can only imagine where a Duke MBA could get me.”
Posner’s team is 100% behind his decision to go for the graduate degree as he will be able to finish the program in under two years, going to school year round and overloading on classes.
“The kid’s drive, focus and work ethic is amazing,” said manager Daniel Weisman. “I am confident he will make a return to music at some point, I just wish he had told me he was thinking about doing this earlier. I still would have supported him.”
“I took the GMAT over the summer and only applied to Duke but didn’t tell anyone,” confesses Posner. “I think I have a lot more to give to the University and vice versa, I’m just glad I got in.”
