Directed by Chris Robinson. And starring Mack 10 as the truck driver. Man this song is so fucking fire. YOU AIN’T GOT NO WINGS IN MI CASA, QUE TE PASA, YOU AIN’T EVEN IN MY CLASSA. Winner for best use of spanglish in a rap.
I’m having lunch with Chris Robinson today who mentioned that he did this video and Mark Ronson made a cameo with his stepfather Mick Jones, the guitarist from Foreigner (M.O.P. sampled Foreigner’s “Cold As Ice” for this record). I can’t catch the cameo but if you can, leave the time in the comments!
I like the use of the Family Ties font at the beginning (see below)
Directed by Spike Jonze who I wrote about on here a few months ago.
I was reminded of this song while watching the MAN ON WIRE trailer, specifically Philippe Petit’s closing quote. “Sky’s The Limite” contains one of my favorite lyrics of all time:
“Stay far from timid, only make moves when your heart’s in it, and live the phrase ‘Sky’s The Limit’”
From Nick:
My good friend Mr. Ducker isn’t a DJ, but he always wanted to make an ultimate ’90s tape, something that brought a mixshow vibe to alt nation sounds. When he asked me to get down with his dream and collaborate, we delved deep into our middle and high school record collections (and used CD bargain bins) and brainstormed new ways to present all the alternative music we grew up on. We were inspired by DJ Spinbad’s impossibly fun ’80s pop mixes: big hits next to unexpected favorites with lots of movie dialogue and interludes for jokes, all smashed up in a dance party megamixxx. Picking from hundreds of beloved Buzz Bin jams was easier said than done (sorry Superdrag, you’ll make Vol. 2!), but with the Mishka crew’s annual trip to Magic in Las Vegas giving us an actual deadline, we finally finished this badmotorfinger as a giveaway CD for their new season. Even with double digit-old tunes, Radio Friendly Unit Shifter feels right on time, connecting the dots between Sonic Youth breakbeats, weeded Lollapalooza rap, gloriously fuzzed-out one hit wonders and much more. No irony, no empty nostalgia, just a lot of music we love that shaped what we do today. They used to play King Missile on the radio! In America! Download and enjoy. - Nick Catchdubs

There is a discussion over on Okayplayer about who would be the first rapper to make an Usain Bolt reference as well as who was the first rapper to reference Michael Phelps.
Wale wanted to put it out there that on his 2005 demo track “Spectacular” featuring DC’s finest, Raheem DeVaughn, he shouted out the Olympic champion. “Spectacular” ended up on his 2nd mixtape, PAINT A PICTURE (technically 3rd if you could Prolly Know Me From The Rap)Click HERE to download “Spectacular” f. Raheem DeVaughn of his PAINT A PICTURE MIXTAPE
This next one is prolly one of the best concerts I ever went to…Roger Troutman aka Zapp in 1997. He was murdered two years later.
Oh man…Prince Musicology Tour…saw him four times, twice in Boston and twice in ATL. This ticket is from when I sat first row. Wow.
And I remember this UCLA game against OSU. This was my first time seeing Brent Barry play and man, was he something in college. I got the back of the ticket autographed by the great John Wooden too.
And Lakers v Bulls from 1997? Jordan had 27 points this game, Pippen had 22. Lakers won 106-90. Kobe played 13 minutes. My how times have changed
I was going through an old box of mine and found a bunch of old tickets I had saved. Man does this bring back memories. Got some corresponding clips after the jump (more…)
