wonder if the mixtape cover inspired the colorway? a bunch of people are doing black and teal this season. trendsettaaaaaa!
I am using this as a jumping off point for an open letter to Obey.
Dear Shepard Fairey,
I am a fan first and foremost so please don’t take this the wrong way. However, you and your brand Obey are, at this point, probably still “bigger” than Wale. All we ask for is some recognition if we in fact inspired this hoodie’s namesake and colorway. If it’s too late for recognition, a few size runs in the hoodie would be awesome. Maybe even like a limited edition Wale version with the lace logo on it? My contact info is on the site. Hope to hear from you soon.
Best,
Dan

Dave Matthews Band founding member and saxophonist LeRoi Moore died Tuesday night (8/19) at the age of 46 from complications related to a June all-terrain vehicle accident.
In high school, the Dave Matthews concert at Foxboro Stadium every May was the official beginning of summer for my friends and I. I was never a huge DMB fan but their concerts were like a religious experience.

There is a discussion over on Okayplayer about who would be the first rapper to make an Usain Bolt reference as well as who was the first rapper to reference Michael Phelps.
Wale wanted to put it out there that on his 2005 demo track “Spectacular” featuring DC’s finest, Raheem DeVaughn, he shouted out the Olympic champion. “Spectacular” ended up on his 2nd mixtape, PAINT A PICTURE (technically 3rd if you could Prolly Know Me From The Rap)Click HERE to download “Spectacular” f. I’m about 100 pages into Anthony Kiedis’ autobiography, Scar Tissue, and I gotta say, it’s a very good read. For those who don’t know, Kiedis is the lead singer of Red Hot Chili Peppers. I love their first album, Freaky Styley, as it was produced by George Clinto and was very much a prism for a number of different musical genres.
Anyway, I love non-fiction but rarely read autobiographies and this is most certainly worth the read. Check out their video for “Californication”:
This next one is prolly one of the best concerts I ever went to…Roger Troutman aka Zapp in 1997. He was murdered two years later.
Oh man…Prince Musicology Tour…saw him four times, twice in Boston and twice in ATL. This ticket is from when I sat first row. Wow.
And I remember this UCLA game against OSU. This was my first time seeing Brent Barry play and man, was he something in college. I got the back of the ticket autographed by the great John Wooden too.
And Lakers v Bulls from 1997? Jordan had 27 points this game, Pippen had 22. Lakers won 106-90. Kobe played 13 minutes. My how times have changed
I was going through an old box of mine and found a bunch of old tickets I had saved. Man does this bring back memories. Got some corresponding clips after the jump (more…)
Spotted this on Kanye’s blog. As a proud Prius owner for almost a year, I love this commercial.
All I can say is wow. That last one is like Space Jam meets a Justice video. Also, thanks for Shov (a reader of the blog) for pointing out that the last one has the same drunk break as Wale’s “Rhyme Of The Century”…it’s actually a very famous drum break from “Apache” by the Incredible Bongo Band
It’s been a very sad weekend. On Thursday night, my friend’s father, Bernie Brillstein, a legendary Hollywood producer/manager passed away. On Saturday, one of the funniest people in the world and a friend of my dad’s, Bernie Mac, passed away. And now today Isaac Hayes passes. All of them definitely passed before their time. It’s really a shame.
Remember when Dilla was JD and he was in a group known as SV and it just so happened he had produced a lot of classic hip hop including ATCQ? I am all about him being memorialized but back in the late 90’s, Dilla was nowhere near the God he is now. Kinda unfortunate.
